Health and Hoops: Empowering Teens Through Awareness, Testing, and Teamwork

On Saturday, September 27, 2025, Inova Juniper and LAZERA’s 1 Brotherhood Empowered Teen Leadership Program and Healthy Communities Action Team (HCAT is sponsored by Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth - VFHY) came together for an inspiring event, Health and Hoops, designed to raise awareness and promote HIV and STI testing among youth ages 14–24 living along the Route 1 corridor.

With 70 youth in attendance, the event successfully blended education, empowerment, and fun. The evening began with an interactive and engaging discussion about HIV, STIs, and the importance of understanding one’s health status. Youth participants learned about prevention, testing, and treatment options in a judgment-free environment that encouraged openness and curiosity.

Following the conversation, 17 youth took the important step to get tested, showing a strong commitment to their own health and well-being. This act of courage and responsibility embodies the mission of both Inova Juniper, VFHY, and 1 Brotherhood Empowered, to empower young people with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions.

Afterward, the energy shifted to the court for a lively 3v3 basketball tournament, bringing together teams of teens for a night of friendly competition and community connection. The laughter, cheering, and team spirit reminded everyone that health and healing thrive in community — when we come together, support one another, and celebrate wellness in all its forms.

Health and Hoops was more than an event, it was a testament to the power of collaboration, education, and youth leadership. Together, Inova Juniper, VFHY,

and 1 Brotherhood Empowered are helping to break stigma, spark dialogue, and build a healthier future for our community.
