From Learning to Action: Community Leadership in Motion Along Route 1

“Being in this space showed me that young people aren’t just the future—we’re part of the change happening right now.” - Teen Participant

Over four weeks, something powerful took shape along the Route 1 corridor.

Twenty-eight community leaders, spanning cultures, generations, and lived experiences, came together with a shared commitment: to confront inequities and reimagine what is possible when community leads. Among them was a six-year-old leader, a reminder that leadership is not defined by age, but by voice, courage, and vision.

What began as a gathering quickly became something deeper, a space of trust, reflection, and transformation. Participants leaned into courageous conversations, built authentic relationships, and explored what it means to lead with intention. Using LAZERA’s 4 Ps Framework, Power, Privilege, Proximity, and Purpose, they examined who holds influence, whose voices are centered, and how systems can shift when those closest to the issues help shape the solutions.

Each session layered learning with practice. Leaders uncovered their personal “why,” reflected on their leadership styles, and strengthened their ability to build and sustain coalitions. Through interactive experiences like community consultation circles and peer coaching, they supported one another in real time, offering not just ideas, but solidarity.

The Academy was more than a training—it was a living example of collective leadership. Grounded in shared agreements of openness, care, and accountability, participants co-created a space where every voice mattered and new possibilities could emerge.

By the end of the four weeks, what remained was more than knowledge gained—it was a strengthened network, a deeper sense of purpose, and a collective commitment to advancing equity and lasting change in the Route 1 community.

From Academy to Action: The COMMUN1TY+ Convening

On March 14, that momentum continued.

The COMMUN1TY+ network came back together—not for a conference, but to re-enter a shared space of trust, connection, and collective action. What unfolded was a living example of what happens when community becomes the container for change.

From the moment participants arrived, the energy was intentional. Leaders, residents, youth, and partners gathered not just to attend, but to contribute—to bring their experiences, their questions, and their commitment to something larger than themselves. The day was grounded in purpose: to catalyze community leadership and move from learning into action.

Through dynamic conversations and shared experiences, the convening centered what it means to lead from within community. A powerful youth-led panel highlighted how collaboration across relationships and systems can drive real change—demonstrating that those closest to the challenges are also closest to the solutions.

The room then shifted into a community-led World Café, where participants didn’t just talk about issues, they stepped into them. Community members hosted conversations around real challenges and opportunities, inviting others to offer ideas, resources, and connections. It was a space not focused on having all the answers, but on building alignment and possibility across the system.

In the afternoon, dialogue deepened through a cross-sector conversation between community leaders and local government partners, highlighting what becomes possible when institutions listen, adapt, and work in partnership with community voice.

The convening culminated in the Community Exchange Circle—a powerful, facilitated space where participants named their needs, shared their offerings, and activated real-time connections. This was not networking as usual; it was mutual aid, relationship-building, and

collective problem-solving in action.

Throughout the day, the spirit of LAZERA’s 4 Ps was not just discussed, but embodied. Participants leaned into new roles, strengthened relationships, and reimagined how systems can shift when community is centered.

A Growing Movement

Together, the Leadership Academy and the COMMUN1TY+ Quarterly Convening reflect something larger than a program or a single event. They represent a growing movement of community leadership along Route 1—one rooted in equity, relationship, and shared responsibility.

From learning to action, from individual reflection to collective impact, this work continues to build momentum. What remains is a strengthened network, a clearer path forward, and a shared commitment to sustaining the “container” of COMMUN1TY+—where trust, collaboration, and community-led change continue to take root.
