A Weekend of Brotherhood, Growth, and Transformation: 3rd Annual Teen Leadership Retreat

During Spring Break, our young men of the 1 Brotherhood Empowered Teen Leadership Program stepped away from their everyday routines and into something intentional, restorative, and deeply transformative. Set against the calming rhythm of sunrise skies and ocean waves in Hague, Virginia, the retreat created space for connection, leadership development, healing, and joy.

Grounded in Purpose

Saturday began early—with a quiet sunrise and a collective commitment to be present. The day unfolded with breakfast and a powerful Beach Meditation and Qi Gong session, grounding the young men in stillness before moving into a session of Strategic Planning for the upcoming Summer and Fall community outreach efforts. This wasn’t just about ideas, it was about vision, ownership, and stepping into leadership with clarity and purpose.

As the day progressed, energy shifted into laughter and camaraderie during the

Brotherhood Olympics, where competition met connection on the beach. But it was during Real Talk that the heart of the retreat truly opened. In that sacred space, walls came down. Young men spoke honestly—about challenges, growth, identity, and what it means to show up for one another. The conversations were raw, affirming, and deeply needed.

Charles, a 3-year leader, captured it best:

“The retreat was peaceful and connecting , the real talk got emotional and lifted people up. That's what the Brotherhood is about. It's a safe space. If you want to get emotional, get emotional. If you want to spread joy, spread joy. It helped a lot of us find peace and get off the highway because I feel a lot of people have a lot on their plate without even knowing it.”

The day continued with new water skills—like kayaking, canoeing, and learning to use a boogie board—reinforcing confidence, teamwork, and a willingness to try something new—before winding down with games, reflections, and brotherhood bonding.

A Sacred Transition

Sunday carried a different kind of energy—more reflective, more ceremonial.

The morning began again with a sunrise watch, followed by meditation to center the group ahead of a powerful moment: Rites of Passage Ceremony. This ceremony marked a defining transition with; New leaders affirmed their roles, Mentors symbolically passed the torch, and the group standing in collective commitment

It was not just symbolic—it was transformational.

Sharif, newly appointed President and Leader, shared:

“I'm leaving this retreat feeling fulfilled with joy and being able to be here with my brothers and connect with them—watching everyone grow into leaders and mentors.”

Moments like these are what shape identity, confidence, and purpose.

Joy, Reflection, and Commitment

The afternoon brought lightness with an Easter egg hunt and free time for rest, reflection, and connection with nature. But as the day closed, the Brotherhood gathered one final time in a circle for one of the most powerful moments of the retreat: “Who I Am Now.” Each young man spoke his truth; what he gained, how he changed, and declaring new commitments.

Richard, a new Mentor and Leader, reflected:

“My favorite part was the ‘real talk’ because it showed me how I could connect with my brothers... I was surprised how well we get along and our chemistry since the first time I joined.”

These reflections weren’t just words—they were declarations of growth.

More Than a Retreat

This weekend was more than a getaway. It was:

  • A space for emotional expression

  • A platform for leadership development

  • A circle of trust and brotherhood

  • A pause from the noise to reconnect with self and others

It reminded every young man present that leadership isn’t just about titles—it’s about vulnerability, accountability, connection, and purpose.

As they return home, they don’t come back the same.

They return more grounded, more connected, and more committed to who they are becoming.

And that is the true Power of Brotherhood.
