Flavors of Route 1: Building Healthy Futures One Recipe at a Time

Across Route 1 and the Buckman Loop community, our cultures, traditions, and stories come alive in the kitchen. Food connects generations. It preserves heritage. It teaches love, resilience, and creativity.

Through the Healthy Communities Action Team (HCAT) initiative, we are proud to launch Flavors of Route 1: Community Recipes for Healthy Kids — a community cookbook designed to celebrate our diversity while promoting childhood wellness.

Why a Community Cookbook?

This cookbook is more than a collection of recipes. It is part of a broader community health effort focused on preventing and reducing childhood obesity by increasing access to healthy foods and encouraging nutritious habits at home.

Through HCAT, partners are working to strengthen systems and environments that support healthier lifestyles. One of the most powerful systems we have is our own kitchen tables. When families share healthy, culturally meaningful meals, we strengthen both our bodies and our bonds.

What We’re Inviting You to Share

We invite you to submit a recipe that is meaningful to you and your family.

  • A dish that reflects your culture or heritage

  • A healthier twist on a traditional favorite

  • A meal that brings your family together

  • A recipe your children love

We especially encourage recipes that promote balanced nutrition and healthy ingredients while honoring cultural traditions.

Your Story Matters

Every recipe tells a story — of migration, celebration, adaptation, and love. By contributing to this cookbook, you are helping:

  • Celebrate the richness and diversity of Route 1

  • Promote healthy eating habits for children

  • Inspire families to try new, nutritious meals

  • Build a stronger, more connected community

Participation is completely voluntary, and privacy will be respected. Contributors may choose to remain anonymous.

Part of a Larger Health Movement

This initiative is supported through the Healthy Communities Action Team (HCAT), in partnership with community organizations committed to improving access to healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity across our region.

Together, we are advancing sustainable policy, systems, and environmental strategies that make the healthy choice the easy choice for families.
