ENGAGEMENT

This Youth-Led program focuses on reducing the impact and exposure to trauma among youth aged 12-19 through cultural enrichment and civic engagement activities. Participants attend monthly meetings, peer support groups, sound therapy sessions, teen nature retreats, and cultural enrichment activities.

Last week we hosted “Health and Hoops” to bring HIV/STI Awareness and testing to our community. Infection is at a high in the Route 1 corridor. 70 teens attended with 17 getting tested. We finished the night with a fun 3v3 tournament. Thanks to @inovahealth @healthyyouthva and Hybla Valley Community Center for sponsoring this event. #hivprevention #1brotherhoodempowered

The movie hit hard, and we talked about the pressure young people face, mental health tools, family, making mistakes, and how hard it can be to ask for help. Everyone had something to say, and it felt good to be open and honest.

2nd Annual Teen Leadership Retreat. The 1 Brotherhood Empowered Leadership Team are taking a much needed break to connect and strategic plan for the upcoming program season (May 2025 - March 2026). This weekend they will develop skills in facilitation to implement peer to peer mental health, prevention, and healthy behavior initiatives. Through experimental learning activities, led by 4 founding members- now mentors, teens will engage n team building, event planning, civic responsibility, and mindfulness leaders will create a calendar of teen led events to share these skills with the greater teen community along Route 1.

They learned about time management, the importance of accessing resources (internships, scholarships, etc.), building relationships with professors, student conduct/expectations, and building healthy friendships.

Join us on Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 9 am to 2 pm for our CAR WASH Fundraiser to help raise funds for our upcoming spring retreat, college visits, and peer-to-peer engagement activities. $300 sponsors 1 teen to attend next month’s retreat, $100 = transportation and food for college visit, $50 = support for monthly meeting supplies and meal, $25 = general program support

Thanks to the Fairfax County Community Service Board Prevention Coalition for inviting our teen leaders to help plan future activities and engagements with the youth community to help them stay safe from substance use and support for their mental health needs. Today’s Topic “Racing to Release: Managing Mental Health Through Coping Strategies” Stress, anxiety, and emotions can build up like the momentum in a race. We need ways to slow down and reset. 1. “Pit Stop: Mindfulness & Deep Breathing” – Practice deep breathing techniques (e.g., box breathing).
2. “Steering Through Stress: Journaling & Expressing Emotions” – Write down feelings or draw emotions related to daily stress.
3. “Refueling: Healthy Physical Outlets” – Engage in light stretching or quick exercises to show movement as a stress release.
4. “Teamwork & Support: Connection Matters” – Share one thing that helps you feel supported by friends or family. Just like in racing, life is full of twists, turns, and speed bumps. The key to success isn’t just acceleration—it’s knowing when and how to slow down and take care of yourself. Last night, the Brotherhood had the honor of sharing our story and mission at the Mt.Vernon High School Basketball Game.

Three years ago, after attending a Howard University basketball game in which they played "Lift Every Voice and Sing" at the beginning of the game, 1 of our founding members, @rockstar.tae8 , advocated for it to be played at all basketball games during Black History Month. During this activity, the teens learned about the difference in "just doing something" vs. "doing something with a plan." We discussed how approaching life (school, relationships, etc.) with a plan results in better outcomes and helps us stay on track. We also discover what individual skills we need to improve and who to reach out to for help and support.
